Everyone is always asking us, "where is your bakery located?" and we've never had a good answer. Yes, we've been baking in Davis and selling at the Davis Farmers Market for more than 30 years, but for years we have not had any retail storefront. We'll we've got some good news. Here's our news release:
THE UPPER CRUST BAKING CO. TO OPEN RETAIL STOREFRONT
Second-Generation Davis Bakery to Open in
Former Radio Shack Location at 634 G Street
DAVIS, CA, MARCH 5, 2018 — The Upper Crust Baking Co. announced today that it will open a combined retail storefront and production bakery at 634 G Street, the location formerly occupied by Radio Shack, adjacent to the Davis Food Co-op.
This will be the first retail storefront for the company in nearly two decades. The second-generation Davis bakery operates a production facility in town, but mainly sells its products at farmers markets throughout the region — including, of course, the Davis Farmers Market.
“We plan to offer our farm-to-oven baked goods alongside local farm products like honeys, conserves, olive oils, and more,” said Lorin Kalisky, the bakery’s co-owner. “We want to promote and celebrate our region’s farms and agricultural producers, many of whom sell us ingredients or work alongside us at farmers markets.”
The Upper Crust Baking Co. was founded in 1986 by Kalisky’s parents, Mo and Trudy Kalisky. Lorin Kalisky grew up learning the trade, but lived away from Davis — in Boston, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Paris — before moving back to town with his wife and children in 2015. Since that time, Kalisky has been gradually taking over day-to-day operations from his parents.
“The Upper Crust is a Davis institution, having served our community for more than 30 years,” said Ann Evans, cofounder of the Davis Food Co-op and the Davis Farmers Market, former Davis mayor, and author of The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook. “This represents an exciting new chapter for them, and I, for one, am looking forward to being able to buy a fresh loaf of Upper Crust bread at times other than Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.”
Plans are not finalized, but the family said they hope to open the new bakery store by early summer.
